The Most Practical Reality: Experiencing God (Unit 3, Day 5)

Welcome back to A Personal Elenchus, where we continue our habit of self-examination and spiritual reflection. Today, we are looking at a profound truth from Henry Blackaby and Claude King’s Experiencing God—specifically Unit 3, Day 5.

If there is a central heartbeat to this entire study, it is this: God pursues a continuing love relationship with you that is real and personal. But Day 5 pushes us to examine a specific facet of this truth that often gets lost in our modern, program-driven world. It forces us to ask a deeply revealing question: Do I actually believe that my relationship with God is practical?

Escaping Theoretical Faith

It is incredibly easy to compartmentalize our lives. We have our “spiritual” life—Sunday mornings, quiet times, theological discussions—and our “practical” life—paying bills, resolving conflicts at work, leading a ministry, or managing a household. We often look to God for the spiritual, but turn to self-help books, management seminars, and sheer willpower for the practical.

Blackaby and King shatter this false dichotomy. They remind us that a real, personal relationship with the Creator of the universe is not an abstract theological concept. It is the most grounded, concrete reality we can experience.

The Words of Christ: The Ultimate Practical Guide

When we look at the words of Christ, we do not see a Savior who offered mere theories. Jesus offered Himself. He taught that His literal, abiding presence was the only way to bear fruit.

In John 15:4-5, Jesus gives us the definitive statement on spiritual practicality:

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”

Notice the absolute nature of His words: apart from me you can do nothing. Jesus didn’t say, “Apart from me you will be less efficient,” or “Apart from me your ministry won’t grow as quickly.” He said nothing. True, lasting, kingdom-level impact is entirely dependent on our connection to Him.

When Jesus was preparing His disciples for His departure, He didn’t hand them a strategic ministry manual or a list of church-growth principles. He promised them a Person—the Holy Spirit. “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you” (John 14:26).

Presence as Our Strategy

Here is the beautiful, challenging truth of Day 5: God’s constant presence is the most practical part of your life and ministry.

When you are facing a difficult conversation with a friend, the most practical tool you have is the immediate wisdom of the Holy Spirit prompting your words. When you are burned out in ministry, the most practical solution isn’t necessarily a better schedule, but returning to the living water that refreshes your soul. When you are making a massive life decision, the most practical step isn’t just a pros-and-cons list, but a real, conversational relationship with the God who already knows the future.

Our culture demands methods. God demands our hearts. When we have the relationship right, the obedience, the direction, and the fruit naturally follow. Let’s step away from the exhausting treadmill of doing things for God in our own strength, and return to the simple, deeply practical reality of doing things with Him.

A Prayer for Grace

Lord, forgive me for the times I have treated You as a distant concept rather than a present reality. I confess that I often lean on my own understanding, my own strategies, and my own strength to navigate life and ministry. I easily forget that apart from You, I can do absolutely nothing of eternal value.

I ask for Your grace today. Give me the grace to abide in the vine. Open my eyes to see that Your constant, abiding presence is the most practical, essential, and beautiful part of my day. Teach me to listen to Your voice, to recognize Your promptings, and to walk in step with Your Spirit. Transform my theoretical theology into a real, personal, and profoundly practical relationship with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
