The Lotus Sutra and Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism

October 12, 2023

The Lotus Sutra is one of the most influential scriptures in Mahayana Buddhism. It emphasizes the universality of Buddhahood – the potential for all conscious beings to attain enlightenment. The central message is that the Buddha nature exists in all people and that the path to Buddhahood is accessible.

In 13th century Japan, a Buddhist monk named Nichiren Daishonin started advocating for chanting the title of the Lotus Sutra – “Nam Myoho Renge Kyo” – as a practice to unlock one’s Buddha nature. He believed that in the Latter Day of the Law, when Buddhism had become corrupted, this chanting was the easiest and most effective path to enlightenment.

Nichiren taught that regular chanting of Nam Myoho Renge Kyo helps awaken the Buddha nature within us, bringing forth inner wisdom, compassion, and courage. By having faith in the universality of Buddhahood as revealed in the Lotus Sutra and chanting its title, he claimed that enlightenment was no longer limited to just monks or ascetics, but was accessible in one’s current lifetime.

The emphasis of Nichiren’s teachings, known as Nichiren Buddhism, is on the universal potential to awaken Buddha nature. By having faith in the Lotus Sutra and engaging in its chanting practice, Buddhahood becomes a practical and meaningful reality available to ordinary people, not merely an abstract concept. Nichiren Buddhists believe regular chanting helps reveal this inner enlightened state.
