When enveloped in darkness, our typical reliance on sight is rendered useless. Without the beam of a flashlight or other light source, we must adapt and utilize our other senses to perceive our surroundings. By channeling our awareness, we can sharpen our hearing, touch, smell and even taste to maneuver through the shadows.

The deprivation of light activates something primal within us. With eyes wide in the dark, our ears become attuned to the subtle sounds around us. The scuffling of feet on the ground, the rustling of leaves, or whispers in the distance can give us clues about what lies ahead. The smallest noises are amplified. auditory information becomes our primary means of gathering input.

Our tactile senses also grow more sensitive. Trailing our fingers along the walls, we gain spatial awareness through textures and vibrations. We feel our way around objects, discerning contours and hard edges. Our skin detects changes in temperature and air currents. We take note of various sensations — the plushness of carpet, the slick metal of a railing, the cold smoothness of glass.

Though sight may be the primary sense we depend on, darkness reminds us of the amazing capabilities of our other senses. Our brain boosts sensitivity, allowing us to perceive our environment through hearing, touch, smell and taste. A world hidden to our eyes becomes mapped in our mind through the other faculties we possess. Paying careful attention, we awaken these often neglected senses and realize their remarkable acuity in building awareness!
