The Divine Pursuit: When God Cross-Examines My Priorities

Welcome back to A Personal Elenchus. If you’ve been following along, you know this space is all about cross-examining our thoughts, habits, and beliefs to get to the core of what is true. Today, I’m wrestling with Unit 3, Day 1 of Henry Blackaby’s Experiencing God, and honestly, it hit me right where it hurts.
The focus of this day is simple yet utterly disruptive: God pursues a love relationship with us.
When we hear the word “religion,” we usually think of a human script—our effort to climb a ladder to reach a distant deity. But Blackaby flips the script. Christianity isn’t a method, a program, or a set of rules to master. It is a relationship with a Person, and God is the one taking the initiative.

The Mind-Blowing Truth: He Initiates

Think about the sheer weight of that for a second. The Creator of the cosmos, the One who speaks galaxies into existence, is actively, intentionally pursuing a personal love connection with you and me.
He didn’t just create us and walk away. He doesn’t just watch us from a distance to see if we mess up. He pursues us.

This links directly to what Jesus called the Greatest Commandment in Matthew 22:37:
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”
If God’s primary desire is for us to love Him with everything we have, then our relationship with Him cannot just be a line item on our to-do list. It has to be the center from which everything else flows. It must be paramount.

The Elenchus: Cross-Examining My Priorities

Here is where the honest self-examination—the elenchus—comes in.
If I look at my life right now, does it look like my relationship with God is my highest priority? Or have I let other things crowd Him out?
It is incredibly easy to substitute doing things for God for actually knowing God. We can get so busy volunteering, studying, ticking off our devotional checklists, and trying to be “good Christians” that we completely miss the Person we are doing it all for. God doesn’t want our flawless performance; He wants our hearts. He wants an intimate, daily, walking-and-talking relationship.
When everything else takes center stage—our careers, our anxieties, our social media feeds, or even our religious duties—we suffer. Nothing else can carry the weight of our souls.
If you are feeling dry, exhausted, or disconnected today, maybe it’s time to stop running, stop trying to perform, and simply allow yourself to be pursued by the One who loves you most.

A Prayer for Undivided Intimacy

To close out today’s reflection, I want to share a prayer. If your heart is yearning to clear out the noise and put God back in His rightful place, make these words your own:
Father, I am so easily distracted. I confess that I often let the noise of the world, the demands of daily life, and even my own good intentions come between us. I get so caught up in doing things for You that I forget to simply be with You.
Thank You for pursuing me. Thank You that You don’t wait for me to get my life perfectly together before You reach out to me. Today, I want to answer that pursuit. I want to love You with all my heart, all my soul, all my mind, and all my strength.
I pray right now that nothing would stand between us. Tear down any idols I’ve built up—whether it’s my comfort, my career, my anxieties, or my pride. Clear away the clutter in my calendar and my mind. Let my relationship with You be the absolute anchor and paramount priority of my life. Keep my heart soft to Your voice, and let me walk in the fullness of Your love today. Amen.
